Issue/Trend:  Childcare Dilemma: Parents Weigh Costs
Childcare is becoming too expensive for families with the change in the economy (Arnold, 2011). Quality of child care is becoming increasingly difficult to afford for working families. Parents have to choose between quality childcare for their child verses saving money.

ZERO TO THREE is a national, nonprofit organization that informs, trains, and supports professionals, policymakers, and parents in their efforts to improve the lives of infants and toddlers.  (http://zerotothree.org/ )
Issue/Trend:  Our Families, Ourselves: How Our History Influences How We Raise Our Children
The information provided the way we are raised influences the way we bring up our kids, the power of the past on our parenting. Also, parents can use reflection and self-awareness to make good parenting decisions today (Siegel, 2009).

  2. Andrea,
Your choice this week really caught my eye. We had my daughter enrolled in a preschool. We were paying $400 a month to send her. We loved it there, so it was worth it. However, During the last two months of the school year, my husband got laid-off from his job. We could no longer afford it. She has a July birthday which meant waiting a year for kindergarten would have been the best choice. However, financially, we did not have that option and had to send her to kindergarten. She ended up repeating kindergarten. Had we had another resource for preschool (we didn't qualify for Head Start), she would not have been placed where she wasn't ready. Thank you for sharing your information and addressing this issue!

  4. I agree with you that good childcare is getting expensive. I pay about $400 a month in daycare for my 2 year old son. Good childcare these days and I must say she is doing a great job with my child. I work with him at home and she is working with him at daycare. He knows a lot to be only 2 years old.

  5. Andrea,
Zero to three is the organization that Dr. Grace talked about in this weeks resources, It seems to be a good resource. I also agree that good childcare is hard to find. Quality care is even harder. As working parents we want our children to be cared for nurtured, and stimulatd cognitively. When the child comes home after learning something new, as parents we lite up because of their quest for knowledge. I believe quality should be made available to everyone.

  6. Andrea,

I too chose the resource Zero to Three. There is so much information offered on this cite and through its journals and newsletters. I plan to use this resource quite often throughout our course and whenever I do decide to have children.

    Thank you for sharing,
    Arica
